The All New Approach in Treating Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome.

The Temporomandibular Joint is a complex joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Stress, teeth grinding and/or clenching, lost teeth, trauma, etc can cause the dysfunction of it.
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome is manifested through several different problems such as pain, decreased motion (inability to fully open the mouth or move the jaw side to side), locked jaw, ringing in the ears and headaches among others. At Dream Smile Dental we have been helping our patients in treating TMJ through different methods for several years.
Since August of 2002 Dream Smile Dental has been using ENERGEX treatment system – a new proven approach to the management of TMJ symptoms. Unlike approaches relying on Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, surgery, or jaw appliances, the ENERGEX system uses pulsed radio-frequency energy (PRFE) to significantly reduce the pain and improve certain other symptoms of TMJ Arthralgia. It’s completely non-invasive and proven safe in clinical environment – with virtually no pain, discomfort or inconvenience to patients.
With a simple hand-held applicator, a pulsed corona discharge is applied directly to the temporomandibular joint for approximately 90 seconds, creating low level electrical stimulation to the tissue and stimulating the blood flow.
In a recent study at the Gelb TMJ Center in Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, ENERGEX therapy was shown to be highly effective in reducing the pain associated with TMJ syndrome and in improving the range of motion in the TMJ joint. 63.33% of treated patients reported improvement in pain, 22% reported increase in mouth opening and 55% reported increase in lateral (sideways) movement.
The process consists of six treatments over the course of two weeks, at a small cost of $40.00 per treatment.

What else is new?

To provide more hours for our patients we have invited Dr. Michael Shulkin to join our practice. Dr. Shulkin recieved his first dental education and experience in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since coming to the US he has graduated from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. After which he completed his residency in General Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco. He practiced in California for 2 years before moving to Massachusetts in 2001. Dr. M. Shulkin is a third generation dentist as he carries the family tradition and incorporates modern American technology into it. As are Drs Ronkin and Shwartzman, Dr. Shulkin is a member of American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
